Successful Home Double-Header Weekend for QC Eagles

The Quad City Eagles gained four points from a possible six after a tough double-header weekend at Spartan Stadium.

On Saturday the Eagles faced a strong Minnesota United Reserves team and came out with a 1-1 draw, before thrashing the Minnesota Twinstars 5-1 to go five points clear at the top of the Midwest Central Conference.

The Eagles started quickly against the Minnesota United Reserves and it only took 7 minutes for the Eagles to find the net. A Simon Brown corner kick found defender Mark Hiller eight yards from goal who headed past the goalkeeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Minnesota United then took the game to the Eagles. Geraldo Garza blocked an effort in the Eagles penalty area before Chris Higgins raced off his line to close the angle and block a Minnesota effort on goal.

The game became stretched in the midfield as both teams looked to hit on the counter attack. Kendrick Tyson and Javi Bautista found space in behind the United defense but it proved to be a frustrating day for the Eagles wingers.

The Eagles best chance to increase the lead fell to forward Charlie MacInnes whose free header from 8 yards sailed straight over the crossbar in the 53rd minute.

However Minnesota made the Eagles rue their missed opportunities. Mac Predham found space 15 yards out and blasted the ball past Higgins in the Eagles goal to earn the United Reserves a 1-1 draw.

On Sunday against the Minnesota Twinstars the Eagles attack found its stride.

In the 9th minute Paul Ledsham broke down the left-wing, crossed to Blake Ordell who smashed the ball in from five yards to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
It was two only minutes later. Kaymran Tairov chipped the ball over the defense for Eddie Garza who smashed the ball into the top left corner from 15 yards.

Blake Ordell hit the post and Tyson the bar, before Tyson lobbed the goalkeeper from 16 yards to give the Eagles a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime.

MacInnes made it 4-0 in the 58th minute with a header into the top left corner from a Simon Brown free-kick.

The game became stretched in the closing stages as fatigue took its toll, but there was still time for two more goals.
In the 82nd minute the Twinstars got a consolation goal with a strong header from a corner, before Bautista broke the offside trap and rounded the goalkeeper to make it 5-1 to the Eagles and cap a successful weekend at home.

The Eagles are now 5 points clear as the race for the Midwest Central Conference title enters the closing stages.
Still unbeaten all year the Eagles now have only two games remaining, an away trip to Minnesota United Reserves on July 5th, before they finish the season at home against Aue Claire Aris FC on July 12th.
