Eagles Defeat 56’ers In Home Opener

The Quad City Eagles first home game of the season saw them emerge as 2-1 winners over the Madison 56’ers, on Saturday June 14th, at Pleasant Valley High School stadium.

In front of over 200 fans the Eagles put in a high quality team performance against their conference rivals to go back to the top of the Midwest Central Conference.

The 56’ers dominated the early exchanges with the Eagles rarely seeing the ball inside the opening minutes of the game.

However it would be the Eagles that would take the lead in the 10th minute. Defensive midfielder Paul Ledsham found space down the right-wing, whipped the ball across the six yard box for striker Charlie MacInnes to volley the ball into the top left corner from 6 yards to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Madison continued to see long spells of possession with the Eagles looking to break through the pace of Javi Bautista and Kendrick Tyson down the wings.

A strong tackle in the 18th minute saw Ledsham pick up a yellow card, with the resulting free-kick blocked by the Eagles wall.

The 56’ers long spells of possession rarely threatened Eagles goalkeeper Chris Higgins until a 25 yard effort struck the outside of the post, minutes before the halftime whistle.

Four minutes after the restart the Eagles increased the lead. A Tyson throw in from the left-wing evaded everyone in the 56’ers penalty area before Bautista picked up the loose ball, beat his marker and smashed the ball into the top left corner to make it 2-0 to the home side in the 49th minute.

Quad City continued to dominate the half and looked to see the game out comfortably until the 87th minute when a parried save by Higgins fell kindly for the 56’ers forward, who cut the scoreline to 2-1.

The game became stretched as Madison pushed for a last-minute equalizer and the Eagles looked to kill the time remaining.

But it would be the Eagles that would get the three points to put them back into first place in the Midwest Central Conference as they continue to defend their conference crown.

The Eagles now look to their next game at home on Sunday June 22nd as they face FC Bordo from St. Louis. The game is at Pleasant Valley High School stadium, kickoff is 2 p.m., tickets are $5 for adults, children 12 and under are free with a paying adult.
