A tough opening weekend, under manned and with back to back games the Eagles had to dig deep on Sunday against a talented Menace squad at Davenport Soccer Complex but a phenomenal defensive effort and two solo runs from Ashley Dexter would see the Eagles take a 2-0 win and a 2 and 0 record in the WPSL’s Midwest-Central division.
The Eagles would have to defend for large stretches of the game against a Menace team who passed the ball well. Counter attacking opportunities would present themselves for the Eagles but the first half would finish 0-0 with no clear cut chances.
The second half would see the Eagles take a stronger foothold in the game and a dangerous run from Dexter would see a goal mouth scramble cleared and a sign of things to come. The game would become more open before Dexter would take her next opportunity herself to open the scoring. It would be minutes later that the situation would repeat itself and Dexter would double the lead.
The next 10 minutes would see the Menace throw everything, but the kitchen sink, at the Eagles defensive line but Dani Pappas, Lisa Trizzino, Kat Schmidt, Kelly Schroeder and Lu Wentz would provide a stubborn rear guard that would repel free kicks, crosses and corners.
The final 10 minutes would see the game open back up and an audacious effort from Renata Peixoto would see a 45 yard lob of the Menace keeper sail inches wide.
The Eagles would hold out to secure the win and another clean sheet.
